REFLECTIONS OF A BLACK DEAF WOMAN

Written and Performed by Michelle A. Banks
Directed by Jeffrey Anderson-Guter

A unique presentation of a one woman show, Reflections of a Black Deaf Woman, is about a special bonding relationship between a Deaf mother (Miz) and her Deaf daughter (Azealea) and how hardships have prevailed throughout their lives with a combination of drama and humor. The life experiences of these women show the stages of growth from the perspectives of Black Dea culture. Miz's difficulties in her life help her to become more dedicated to Azealea's upbringing and to encourage her daughter to love herself. Miz's and Azealea's struggles and triumphs throughout their lives help them set a more precise example of who they are.

This is the first play of its kind that speaks to and about the relationship between a Black Deaf mother and her daughter. This play is not autobiographical, but inspired by the life experiences of African-American Deaf women. It is performed in American Sign Language and Spoken English.
